What is psychotherapy, and how can it help me?

Psychotherapy is a supportive process where we explore thoughts, emotions, and behaviours to help overcome challenges, improve mental health, and achieve your goals.

How do I know if I need therapy?

Therapy can help if you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or struggling to manage emotions, relationships, or life changes. However, it’s also valid to seek therapy even if you don’t have clear goals or aren’t sure if you “need” it. Mental health is health, and receiving support is always okay. You don’t need to be struggling at a certain level to benefit from therapy - this is a space for growth, self-discovery, and building resilience.

What can I expect in the first session?
The first session is an opportunity to share your concerns and goals, and for us to get to know each other. I’ll explain how therapy works and answer any questions you have.

How long do therapy sessions usually last?

Sessions typically last 50 minutes.

How often will we meet, and for how long will I need therapy?

This varies based on your needs and goals. Many clients start with weekly or biweekly sessions, and then adjust as needed.

Do you offer in-person or online sessions?

I currently offer sessions online and in person in Sudbury, Ontario. Online therapy is conducted through a secure platform.

What types of therapy do you offer?

I offer individual psychotherapy, couples therapy, and parenting support, with neurodiversity-affirming and trauma-informed approaches as required.

What is the difference between individual and couples therapy?

Individual therapy focuses on your personal growth and challenges, while couples therapy works on improving communication, connection, and problem-solving in your relationship.

How much does therapy cost, and do you accept insurance?

My fee is $175 / session. I do not currently bill insurance directly, but I do provide receipts for reimbursement if your extended benefits cover psychotherapy. I encourage you to review your benefit plan to ensure coverage.

What should I look for when choosing the right therapist for me?

Look for someone whose approach aligns with your needs and makes you feel comfortable, safe, and understood. A free 10-minute consultation can help determine if we’re a good fit.

Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy

What is neurodiversity-affirming therapy?

Neurodiversity-affirming therapy supports the unique experiences of neurodivergent individuals without focusing on “fixing” or changing who you are.

Can you diagnose me with Autism or ADHD?

As a Registered Psychotherapist, it is not within my scope of practice to provide formal diagnoses. Please note that a diagnosis is not required to receive neurodiversity-affirming therapy, and I also welcome individuals who are navigating the possibility of being neurodivergent. For those who wish to pursue a formal diagnosis, I can provide resources and referrals to professionals specializing in assessments for Autism, ADHD, and other conditions.

How can therapy help me as an Autistic or ADHD individual?

Therapy can help you navigate challenges like emotional regulation, executive functioning, burnout, and relationships while also embracing your strengths and identity. It can also help navigate any trauma or negative beliefs you may hold about yourself due to neurodivergent traits.

Do you have experience working with neurodivergent clients?

Yes! A significant portion of my caseload, since I have been practicing, has consisted of neurodivergent individuals, particularly Autistic and ADHD clients. My professional development, both during and after my education, has included intensive training in working with neurodivergent individuals. This includes foundational and advanced training for mental health professionals through CMHO and Autism Ontario, as well as continuing education on topics relevant to Autistics. I have also completed intensive training programs on ADHD.

In addition, I am dedicated to staying informed by continuously researching new studies and modalities to better support neurodivergent clients. I actively participate in peer consultation groups with other neurodivergent and affirming therapists to share resources, insights, and training.

And as an Autistic therapist myself, I can say that Autism, ADHD, and psychology are special interests of mine—so you can trust I’m just as passionate about this work as I am informed!

Do you provide support for parents of neurodivergent children?

Yes! I offer parenting support to help you better understand your child’s needs, foster connection, and address parenting challenges effectively.

How does neurodiversity-affirming therapy differ from traditional therapy?

Traditional therapy often stigmatizes or pathologizes conditions such as Autism and ADHD, or utilizes strategies and coping techniques developed for neurotypical individuals and couples. Neurodiversity-affirming therapy focuses on accepting and valuing neurodivergence rather than trying to conform to societal norms and adapting modalities to ensure they meet the specific needs of neurodivergent individuals.

Can you help with sensory sensitivities, executive functioning challenges, or social difficulties?

Absolutely. Together, we can build an understanding of these common difficulties and explore affirming strategies to manage these challenges that best support your well-being.

Couples Counselling

How can couples therapy help us?

Couples therapy provides a safe space to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen your connection. It focuses on working together to better understand and meet each other’s needs.

Do we need to be in crisis to benefit from couples therapy?

Not at all. Therapy can be valuable for improving any relationship, whether you’re navigating conflict, adjusting to life changes, or simply wanting to deepen your connection.

What if my partner and I have different goals for therapy?

This is common and completely okay. Couples therapy can help you identify and align your goals while addressing each person’s concerns.

Can couples therapy help if one or both of us is neurodivergent?

Yes! I offer neurodiversity-affirming couples therapy to support relationships where one or both partners are neurodivergent or in mixed-neurotype relationships. We’ll explore how neurodivergence affects communication and connection while building mutual understanding and respect.

What if my partner is hesitant about attending therapy?

It’s natural for one partner to feel uncertain. Starting with a conversation about what therapy can offer and addressing concerns in a non-pressuring way can help. A free consultation may also provide clarity and reassurance.

Parenting Support

How can therapy help me as a parent?

Parenting can be both rewarding and challenging. Therapy offers a space to explore your parenting style, address struggles with your child’s behavior, and develop strategies to foster connection, manage stress, and navigate difficult situations effectively.

Can you help me if me or my child is neurodivergent?

Absolutely. I have a special interest in working with parents of neurodivergent children, helping you understand your child’s unique needs, build effective communication strategies, and create a supportive environment where your child can thrive.

What if I feel like I’m failing as a parent?

Many parents feel this way at times, but therapy can help you reframe these feelings, address challenges without judgment, and equip you with tools to feel more confident and capable in your role.

Do you offer strategies for co-parenting?

Yes, I can help parents navigate co-parenting dynamics, whether you’re separated, divorced, or simply seeking better ways to work as a team for your child’s well-being.

Will I need to bring my child to the sessions?

Parenting support often focuses on your experiences and challenges as a parent, and as such children typically do not attend sessions.
